Summary
Crankd is a cycling app by Vortra LLC. We collect GPS location data to record your rides, account information to provide our service, and payment information to process subscriptions. We do not sell your personal data. Your GPS data records your rides; rides you choose to make public or share with followers become visible to those users, and route coordinates are processed by our mapping and weather providers to render maps and conditions. With your permission, Crankd reads heart rate (including resting heart rate) from Apple Health; heart-rate data is used for your personal ride analysis and, for Pro subscribers, to generate your Crankd Coach reading. You can optionally provide your date of birth, used solely to estimate your maximum heart rate for effort zones.

1. What Information Do We Collect?
In Short: We collect information you provide to us and information generated by your use of the app.
Personal information you provide:
- Name and email address (account registration)
- Profile photo (optional)
- Subscription status — purchases are processed and billed by Apple's App Store; we never receive or store your card details
- Bike details you enter (make, model, components)
- Date of birth (optional) — used solely to estimate your maximum heart rate for effort-zone calculation. Stored with your account and deleted when you delete your account. Never shared, sold, or used for advertising.
- Display name and preferences
Information collected automatically:
- GPS location data during active ride recording sessions
- Heart rate data — read from your Apple Watch or other health sources via Apple HealthKit, or from a connected heart rate monitor, during ride recording
- Ride metrics: distance, duration, elevation, speed
- Device type and operating system version (for crash reporting)
Apple Health (HealthKit): With your permission, Crankd reads heart rate from Apple HealthKit during rides so your effort zones update live and on the heatmap replay. Crankd can also read your resting heart rate, which upgrades your effort-zone boundaries to heart-rate-reserve math, and your date of birth, which sharpens the maximum-heart-rate estimate — the Health-app date of birth is used on your device only and is never stored on our servers. A derived zone profile (your maximum heart rate, resting heart rate, and how the maximum was determined) is stored with your account so the app and Crankd Coach use identical zone boundaries. When you save a ride, Crankd writes it back to the Health app as a cycling workout. If you allow it during setup, Crankd also imports up to 90 days of your recent Apple Health cycling workout history to give Crankd Coach additional context. You control this access under iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health and can revoke it at any time. We do not store Apple Health data in iCloud and never use it for advertising.
Third-party sign-in: If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email address from those providers as permitted by their terms.
2. How Do We Process Your Information?
In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and personalize Crankd.
- To create and manage your account
- To record, store, and display your rides
- To generate AI-powered ride analysis (Crankd Coach, Pro tier only)
- To track component wear across your bikes
- To verify and manage your subscription (purchased through Apple's App Store)
- To send you important account and service notifications
- To improve app performance and fix bugs via crash reporting
- To comply with legal obligations
3. When and With Whom Do We Share Your Information?
In Short: We share information only with service providers necessary to operate Crankd. We do not sell your data.
Service providers we use:
- Firebase (Google) — authentication, database, storage, and crash reporting
- Apple App Store — subscription purchase, billing, and payment processing on iOS
- Mapbox — map rendering and route visualization; route coordinates are sent to render maps
- Google Maps Platform — static map images for ride route thumbnails and share cards; route coordinates are sent to generate these images
- OpenWeatherMap — local weather conditions for your ride; approximate coordinates are sent to retrieve the forecast
- Anthropic — AI ride analysis for Crankd Coach (Pro tier). Ride metrics — including health-derived data such as your average heart rate, heart-rate-zone minutes, and a summary of imported Apple Health workout history — are sent to Anthropic solely to generate your coaching reading. This data is not used to train models.
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties.
4. Do We Use Cookies and Tracking Technologies?
Crankd is a mobile app and does not use browser cookies. We do not use analytics SDKs or advertising trackers, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. We use Firebase Crashlytics to collect crash and performance diagnostics so we can fix bugs; this is used only to improve app stability.
5. How Long Do We Keep Your Information?
- Account data — retained as long as your account is active
- Ride data — retained as long as your account is active or until you delete individual rides
- GPS data — stored as part of your ride records in Firebase, used to record and display your rides. Rides you choose to make public or share with followers are visible to those users, and route coordinates are sent to our mapping and weather providers (see Section 3) to render maps and conditions. We do not sell your location data or use it for advertising.
- Payment and subscription transaction records — retained after account deletion as required by law for financial and tax compliance (typically 7 years), then deleted
- Crash logs — retained for 90 days
6. How Do We Keep Your Information Safe?
We use Firebase Security Rules to ensure only you can access your own data. All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Subscription billing is handled entirely by Apple's App Store, and we never see or store card numbers. We use Firebase App Check to prevent unauthorized access to our backend services.
7. Do We Collect Information from Minors?
Crankd is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us personal information, please contact us at support@vortraapp.com and we will delete it.
8. What Are Your Privacy Rights?
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate information
- Request deletion of your account and personal data
- Export your ride data
- Withdraw consent for optional data processing
To exercise these rights, contact us at support@vortraapp.com. You can also delete your account directly from the app under Profile → Delete Account.
9. Controls for Do-Not-Track Features

10. US State Privacy Rights
If you are a California resident, Colorado resident, or resident of another US state with applicable privacy laws, you have additional rights regarding your personal information.

13. How Can You Review or Delete Your Data?
You can delete your account and personal data directly in the app under Profile → Delete Account. Residual copies may persist temporarily in routine backup cycles before being purged. Crash diagnostics expire on their normal 90-day cycle.
